Weightlifting is one of the strengths of Vietnamese sports, having produced top athletes on the continent and internationally.

Closing the 17th ASIAD in Incheon, Korea in 2014 with a memorable silver medal (HCB) in the 56kg weight category, athlete Thach Kim TuanĀ entered the World Weightlifting Championships (World Championships) held in Almaty, Kazakhstan

Here, the athlete from Binh Thuan delivered an extremely classy performance, breaking 11 records – including national and world records, and bringing home a gold medal (HCV).

Facing such great challenges, but for an athlete who had to go through extremely harsh circumstances from a very young age like Thach Kim Tuan, the young man who was only 20 years old at that time was still very confident and brave.

In his forte in snatch and jerk, Kim Tuan successfully completed all three weights of 130kg, 134kg and 135kg, officially breaking the old record of 134kg set by himself at ASIAD 2 months earlier in Korea.

Coming to the lifting content, Kim Tuan failed in his first attempt at 156 kg;

Thus, both Thach Kim Tuan and Om Yun Chol reached a total weight of 296kg, but because they were 4 grams heavier than their opponents, our representative had to accept the overall silver medal in this weight category.

Even though he had to accept a bitter final defeat, overall this is still a great achievement for Thach Kim Tuan.

Excellent achievements at the World Championship helped Thach Kim Tuan earn more than 500 million VND in prize money.
