(Dan Tri) – The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff said that Iran’s missile attack in the early morning of January 8 was aimed at killing US soldiers at a military base in Iraq.

“Based on what I saw and what I know, I believe that (Iran’s) attack was intended to cause material damage, destroy vehicles and equipment, aircraft, and kill people.

However, according to General Milley, analysis of the attack belongs to professional intelligence analysts and they are still reviewing this incident.

General Milley said he and other members of the US military believe that Shia militia groups in Iraq, with the support of Iran, have conducted attacks against the US and US-led forces.

The comments of the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff came just a few hours after President Donald Trump gave his first speech after Iran’s attack.

Mr. Trump affirmed that Iran’s attack did not cause casualties to any US soldiers and there was only minimal damage at military bases in Iraq.

Speaking alongside General Milley, US Defense Secretary Mark Esper warned that the US military remained in a state of `readiness` after Iran’s attack.

According to two senior US military officials, Iran launched 16 short-range ballistic missiles from at least three locations inside Iranian territory.

The US Secretary of Defense said that the damage caused by Iran’s attack was very small.

General Milley said that Iran’s missiles all carry warheads and each warhead contains a significant amount of explosives.

Neither General Milley nor Secretary Esper received any early warning from Iraq about the Iranian attack, while Iraq said it was informed by Iran.

Secretary Esper affirmed that the US has restored the level of deterrence with Iran after the airstrike that killed a senior Iranian general last week.
